Achilles Rupture

achilles Tendon rupture

Achilles tendon rupture is an uncommon but significant injury to the ankle. It commonly occurs in sports and often feels like being hit in the back of the ankle. Traditionally, the repair required a large open incision which was complicated by high rates of wound healing problems and infection. The potential benefits of surgery include greater strength and earlier return to activities. Long term outcomes are similar when proper physical therapy and functional rehabilitation are initiated. We utilize a modified minimally invasive technique to allow repair of the tendon via a <2cm incision. The technique also allows the patient to remain supine which allows the procedure to be performed under light anesthesia. The risk of a wound complication is far lower than for typical open procedure with excellent outcomes and return to activities postoperatively.
